Aran Cucine

Aran Cucine Formerly a run-down antique shop, this tenant improvement stripped the existing structure down to its basic elements to create a simple, raw backdrop for the new retail experience.  To accomplish this all existing framing was sandblasted, ceiling and exposed hardware were painted black and major beams were given a light whitewash to highlight the structure.  Stainless steel cable railing and a concrete floor finish round out the neutral palette.  Aran Cucine provides custom cabinetry for kitchens and closets.  JLC provided basic design and permit processing for the new build-out.   Construction Type: Tenant Improvement Location: Solana Beach, CA Date Completed: 2016

Phase 1 implemented 3,500 square feet of growing surface within the first 6,900 square feet of greenhouse.   Read more at the Solutions for Change blog.   Construction Type: Renovation/Addition Location: Vista, CA Date Completed: 2012 Project Team: Eleven Western Builders, Allen Brothers Construction, Smart Engineering, Eco Building Products, Brickman Landscape, Dimensional Technologies

Claire’s on Cedros

Claire’s on Cedros – Bakery and Cafe, LEED Platinum certified (and former JLC office) Buildings scattered across an underutilized urban site provided the framework for a new urban intervention. In order to avoid a time-consuming design review, all but 500 square feet of the new construction had to fall within the envelope of existing buildings. The footprint of the original house and rental unit were ultimately linked together to form a restaurant with a bakery on one side, while Steel hangers morphed in a retail space, residential unit and carport on the other. The traditional form of the house was maintained and now sits comfortably alongside the more modern architecture towards the rear of the site. Sustainable design is emphasized throughout the site.  These features include pervious paving, green roof, FSC certified wood framing and cladding, durable materials such as concrete block, a standing seam aluminum roof, and cement-based siding. The mechanical systems used work in tandem with a large photovoltaic array. Windows are designed to take advantage of coastal breezes that provide plenty of natural light. Low VOC and recycled interior finishes provide the best possible interior environment.   Claire’s received LEED Platinum certification in February 2010 and was recognized […]
